Businesses want to create relevant messages for their customers, but they struggle.
83% of businesses agree that creating relevant ads is very or extremely important. They understand that they need to answer their customers wants and needs with the right ad, at the right time.
However, we know that this is getting harder. More than half of the firms in our study say they believe digital advertising has become more complicated over the past 5 years, and firms are most likely to call out having to find and reach new customers and driving ongoing customer loyalty as being increasingly complicated as well.
However, despite wide recognition that relevant ad experiences are important, currently only 26% of consumers say the ads they see from retailers are relevant.

Methodology
In this study, Forrester interviewed 643 decision-makers at companies with fewer than 500 employees in the US, Brazil, UK, Germany, India, and Japan to evaluate the current state of digital advertising and audience targeting solutions adoption. Survey participants included decision-makers in marketing departments. Questions provided to the participants asked about their digital advertising and targeting strategies. Respondents were offered a small monetary incentive as a thank you for time spent on the survey. The study began in October 2017 and was completed in February 2018.
